Dear Officers, Marines, FMF Corpsmen, FMF Navy Chaplains, and Associates:

Instructions for all Members in the Department of WV Marine Corps League & visitors & guests, if you can attend and participate in Honor of Medal of Honor Recipient Hershel Woody Williams.

At 8:00 am Saturday July 2, 2022 - the mortuary will transport Woody from the funeral home to the Capitol Rotunda in Charleston, WV. I understand Hurricane Det 1474 is putting together a final salute on an overpass along the route of the herse. If you want to participate in that, contact Jim McDade, Adjutant-Paymaster for Det 1474 and Judge Advocate for the Department.

Visitation will be Saturday July 2, 2022 from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm at the Rotunda in Charleston. Members are to meet at 4:00 pm at the Gold Star Family Memorial Monument in Charleston, WV to go together to the visitation. UOD is Red Polo shirt, Black Trousers, and your Cover. You should carpool and park in the 4 tier parking garage behind the War Memorial. They do charge for parking so be prepared!

Visitation on Sunday will be 10:00 am until 2:00 pm at the Rotunda; then they'll move Woody from the Rotunda to the Cultural Center between 2:00-4:00 pm, then the funeral service will be at 4:00 at the Cultural Center. UOD on Sunday is Red Blazer, White Shirt, Black Trousers, and Covers. Members should meet at the War Memorial on Sunday at 2:00 for the funeral.

Burial will be a private family service at the Donel C Kinnard State Memorial Cemetery in Dunbar at a later date.

Herschel ‘Woody’ Williams passed away this morning at 3:15 am. He was the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from WWII, earning this prestigious award during the Battle of Iwo Jima.

My salute to you Mr. Williams and say hello to my Dad "Red" when you see him. Blessings to the family of this great Marine.

May this Great Hero Warrior rest in Peace with The Lord God and bless his family 🙏 is our humble prayer.

The Lord could not have selected a more perfect candidate for assignment to guard the gates. Semper Fidelis Woody and till we meet again in like assignment! To his family, my deepest condolences and heartfelt sorrow for your loss but swell with pride on his new assignment!

My uncle , Joe Coffey, was there with the Marines too. Rest in peace Gentlemen 🙏. You earned it !

He seemed to have dealt with the whole thing very well throughout his life. I’m sure he had his struggles, but he never showed it that was public that I ever knew of. A really fine gentleman and an incredible example of USMC Honor.
